Sivan Park in K K Nagar gears up for Pongal celebrations

Chennai: If you are not going to native place for Pongal, don’t worry. Head to Sivan Park, K K Nagar, where the festival will be celebrated in a grand manner that too in village style.

Yes, for the eighth consecutive year, the four-day event will commence here from 14 January. Virugambakkam MLA V N Ravi will inaugurate the festival.

The festival is being organised by former Councillor M Gunasekaran in coordination with Tamilnadu Senior Citizens Association, Sivan Park Walkers and Mega Gym Friends.

Speaking to News Today, Gunasekaran said like previous years, this time too, the celebration will be conducted in a grand manner, thus attracting large number of visitors.

“The entire park will be illuminated during the festival days, from 6 pm to 10 pm and special programmes have been arranged to entertain visitors,” he said.

People can take selfies in the backdrop of things that symbolise harvest festival. Apart from it, there will be spectacular lighting arrangements.

On the first day, after formal inauguration, pongal will be distributed to all in the park, the former Councillor said.
On Maatu Pongal Day, a cow will be brought to the park. Special pooja will be performed and pongal will be given to it, apart from gifts.

As thousands of people visit the park during the four-day celebrations, elaborate security arrangements will be made.

“Policemen will be present and our volunteers will be there to help visitors,” Gunasekaran said.

“Around 30 policemen will be present during the festival days in the park.  We will put up barricades to regulate crowd,” said R7 Police Inspector (L&O) M Shivakumar.

A special stage will be set up on the eastern side of the park for the
four-day celebrations from 5 pm to 9 pm. They are:
14 Jan – Patti Mandram
15 Jan – Musical nite by children
16 Jan – Rural folk art event by Madurai Ambalanathan
17 Jan – Cinema entertainment programme by B Senthil
