Chennai: Velacheri Police Station on Gandhi Road is in the news for all the right reasons. The station has been garnering attention since the massive renovation the premises underwent last year.
A few days ago, city Commissioner A K Viswanathan, recognised the station for being the cleanest in South Zone by giving an award.
Law and Order Inspector Raju Prince Arun received the ‘Thuimayana Kaval Nilayam’ award at the Commissioner’s office in Vepery.
An official of the station said, “In November 2019, the Commissioner ordered all stations in the city to clear pending records and the premises to be cleaned. We did a good job of it. We also renovated the station and it is well-maintained. We have an air conditioned waiting room for visitors, a badminton court and a resting room for police personnel with A/C, cots and cupboard.”
Head Constable Velan said, “We take a few minutes of our break time and clean the campus. All of us take turns to do it. We plan to put new lights and also develop the garden.”
A visitor to the station can be assured that s/he will not be made to wait for long and the complaints be addressed at the earliest.
The station also celebrated Pongal in a very inclusive way with residents. Personnel here are taking a conscious effort to be people friendly.
Velan said, “We invited children supported by the Police Boys Club in TNHB Colony. Close to 100 children aged six to ten came spent close an hour with us and were given gifts sponsored by Inspector Raju. Sweet pongal was served to them.’ They also invited passersby to have pongal sweet at the station premises.”
All the police personnel were given gifts as well.
