Chennai: The Central government today informed the Supreme Court that it is upto the Governor to decide on the release of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts.
Responding to a petition filed by Nalini, one of the convicts, the Centre’s representative said, ”In 2018 itself we rejected the release of the convicts proposed by the State government. However, Perarivalan had approached the Governor with a mercy plea. Now it is within the power of the Governor to take a call on this plea.”
In her petition Nalini had mentioned that though the State government had passed a resolution for their release, the convicts are kept illegally in the prison. She asked the court to intervene and release them. The case has been postponed by the judges for further hearing on 12 February.
