Covid threat: Plea in HC to close TASMAC liquor shops

Chennai: An advocate today filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to order closure of all TASMAC liquor shops till the outbreak of coronavirus was contained.

Admitting the plea, a Division Bench comprising Mr Justice M M Sundaresh and Mr Justice Krishnan Ramaswamy directed the state government to file its response within a week.

In his plea, advocate A P Suryaprakasam said since most of the shops and bars attached to them were located in crowded areas, the unhygienic atmosphere in such bars would trigger outbreak of coronavirus and wanted them to be closed immediately.

He also sought a direction to the Chennai corporation to ensure three hours supply of water daily to the people of the city to contain spread of COVID-19 and maintain cleanliness.
