Editorial: Let’s cooperate

We don’t have any other option than to follow the directions of the government, as doing so would only safeguard us from the attack of the deadly coronavirus.

Witht the number of covid-19 hit cases crossing 400 in India and touching 12 in Tamilnadu, the government has imposed Section 144 in the State. It is time for everyone to stay indoors. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said 18,383 samples have been tested till 10 am on Monday. It was not immediately clear where the new cases have come from.

The total number of positive novel coronavirus cases includes 67 in Maharashtra, including three foreigners, and Kerala also at 67, with seven foreign nationals, data issued by the Union Health Ministry showed.

Cases have been reported from across the country, including from Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Gujarat, Bihar and Maharashtra reported a death each on Sunday. Four fatalities were reported earlier from Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra and Punjab, the Ministry said.

Police arrested 255 people in Kolkata on Monday evening for violating the restrictions imposed in the metropolis in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, officials said. The arrests were made after 5 pm when the lockdown came into effect, they said, adding that those held will be prosecuted under sections dealing with disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant.

Checkings are underway at every important junction of the city, officials said. Such strong measures are needed in Tamilnadu too and cooperation from people is the need of the hour.
