Chennai: Even as the government is taking maximum steps to prevent spread of coronavirus, there are a few good-minded people who are doing their part, especially in their locality.
Former Councillor (Ward 131/New 136) ‘Star’ M Gunasekaran is one among them. Gunaseakaran and his team (comprising 14 members) are carrying out preventive measures and also helping government officials, besides feeding the needy at K K Nagar.
Speaking to News Today, Gunasekaran said, “In my ward, there are 39,000 people residing. Of them, 44 houses have been put under watch by the officals as those residing there have come from foreign countries. The officials have pasted stickers in front of their hosuses and visit twice a day. The police are also watching them, so that they don’t come out of the house.”
“The Coroproation workers are making sure that the locality is clean and are into fogging. On my part, I have purchased 350 litres of Lysol IP (cresol with soap solution). One litre of it can be mixed with 200 litres of water. We have hired a vehicle, fixed a tank (1000 litre capacity) and filled it with Lysol. The volunteers have sprayed it covering 132 streets in the ward. In places where vehicles can’t go, we are using automatic hand machines so that all places are covered,” he said
“The volunteers are taking adequate preventive measures when they are outside. They wear mask and gloves. We also distributed nilavembu kashayam door-to-door. The worst affected during the present crisis are roadside dwellers. We are preparing food daily so that 100 people are fed. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are at present put up at a community hall at Virugambakkam,” the former Councillor said.
“The government officials are doing their best and we stand by them. They risk their lives to save our people. Apart from providing them with masks and gloves, we have donated 15 suits (corona protective dress) to Corporation workers. They are wearing it and visit houses which are under the virus scanner,” Gunasekaran said.
The former Councillor has one request. “We are in the field in last few days. We noticed that many bachelors and families are affected financially. I request their well-wishers and relatives to come forward and help them.”
