Curious case of airline staff’s death in Chennai

Chennai: Though Tamilnadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh said on Sunday that 11 deaths were reported in the State, a male employee – an aircraft maintenance engineer–of the IndiGo airlines died at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) Saturday night due to corona infection, which was confirmed by a statement by the airliner, but an official confirmation was yet to come from the Health department.

The airline statement said, “We are extremely sorry and saddened by the demise of one of our beloved employees in Chennai due to infection of Covid 19 virus.”

“We are providing all support to the family and stand with them at this hour of deep grief. This is a heart-breaking moment for all of us at IndiGo and in this time of sorrow we stand with his family and request that we respect the privacy of our employee and his family,” it added.

Meanwhile, Beela Rajesh said 90 of the 106 cases tested positive on Sunday were linked to Nizamuddin Markaz religious conference. Of the total 1,075 cases in Tamilnadu, 971 were from ‘single source contact’, linked to last month’s Tablighi Jamaat conference in Delhi.
