Chennai: The State police have arrested as many as 2,18,535 persons until this morning for violating rules during lockdown.
According to a press release from the DGP’s office, the police have recorded 2,05,054 violations. They have seized nearly 1,85,896 vehicles of those defying prohibitory orders.
From the violators, an amount of Rs 98, 07,394 has been collected as fine. From 24 March, the State police imposed Section 144 which restrains people from stepping out of the house unnecessarily.
Following this, violators were fined and their vehicles were being seized. Yesterday onwards the police began returning seized vehicles to owners during a fixed time, from 12 noon to 1 pm, adhering to social distancing norms at police stations.
