Chennai: The toll in corona-related deaths in Tamilnadu increased to 21, with a 72-year-old woman, who had tested positive, passing away at the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) early today.
Reports received at the State headquarters in Chennai confirmed the death. Police sources said that the Covid-19 victim hailed from West Masi Street in Madurai city and was the mother of a priest at the famous Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
She had co-morbid conditions like coronary artery disease for the past 10 years and diabetes. The woman, who was initially treated at a multi-speciality hospital,was shifted to the isolation ward at GRH on 21 April due to fever
and breathlessness.
Her blood and swab tests returned positive for coronavirus on Thursday. The woman succumbed early this morning without responding to treatment. With this a total of 21 people have died of Covid-19 till date.
This is the second Covid death in Madurai district after a 54-year-old man succumbed to the virus on 25 March, which incidentally was also the first death recorded in Tamilnadu due to corona.
District Collector T G Vinay said the last rites of the woman were conducted as per the protocols framed for the management of dead bodies infected with COVID-19.
