Madurai: The celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar took place between 8.30 am and 10.15 am at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
For the first time, the event went completely digital. Following the COVID-19 lockdown, a minimum number of priests performed the pujas and devotees watched the event live on the websites – www.tnhrce.gov.in, www.maduraimeenakshi.org/live-webcast/ and Meenakshi temple’s YouTube channel.
Every year, Tamilnadu prepares for the annual Chithirai Thiruvizha festival in Madurai, during which Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar get married. During the fortnight-long event, Meenakshi goes through the ceremony of coronation and her brother Lord Azhagar visits the city.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Chithirai Thiruvizha 2020 was celebrated differently, with no congregation of thousands of devotees on the streets. Also for the first time, the festival was streamed online for devotees.
