Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator J Anbazhagan, who was suffering from Covid-19, passed away at a private hospital at Chrompet in Chennai this morning.
Earlier in the day, as his health condition worsened, DMK president M K Stalin and senior leaders visited the hospital and discussed with the doctors team which was providing teatement to Anbazhagan.
Soon after that, police personnel were deployed in and around the hospital in large numbers. Later, it was declared that Anbazhagan died without responding to treatment.
Anbazhagan, who was also DMK West Chennai district secretary, was the first elected representative from Tamil Nadu to test positive for virus.
Stalin recently met Hospital Chairman Dr Mohamed Rela and the medical team and enquired about Anbazhagan’s health and the treatment being given to him, according to a statement.
Son of former DMK MLA Jayaraman, Anbazhagan was elected to the State Assembly from Chepauk constituency in the 2016 elections.
Earlier, he was first elected to the Assembly from the T.Nagar seat in the 2001 elections and later from Chepauk in 2011 and 2016.
