Unofficial lockdown comes into effect in many parts of Tamilnadu


Chennai: Starting today, increased restrictions have come into force in many parts of the State to prevent the rapid spread of Covid-19. Intra-State public transport has been stopped, while people need e-pass to cross district borders.

Also, sources say, police department has been asked to restrict the movement of public. ‘No inter-district movement of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses will be allowed from 25 to 30 June. Movement of private vehicles to another district will be allowed only after obtaining e-passes,’ Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said Wednesday.

So far, six districts of Tamilnadu – Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Theni and Madurai – are under total lockdown until 30 June

Since it was difficult to trace the contacts of person, who move from zone to zone without e-pass, and tested positive, it was decided to make e-pass mandatory from today to 30 June.

While banning inter-zonal transport system in view of the increasing cases as people had left for their native places after the intense 19 to 30 June lockdown was announced in Chennai and three neighbouring districts, Palaniswami said people could travel within their district without e-pass, while making it mandatory for travel from one district to other.

He also said till 30 June public transport would be operated only within the district and appealed to the people to extend their cooperation to prevent spread of coronavirus.
