Chennai: The medical expert team today said that they have not recommended for the extension of lockdown in the State.
Speaking to mediapersons after meeting Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Prabhdeep Kaur, Scientist–E/Deputy Director, Indian Council of Medical Research–National Institute of Epidemiology, said spreading of the infection has come under control in Chennai due to the existing lockdown.
‘Lockdown alone cannot be the solution to control the spread of virus. We told the government that the infrction increased due to public transportation,’ she said.
Prabhdeep also added that the committee has recommended to increase control measures in containment zones.
‘We are planning to implement one treatment method across the State,’ she said.
The expert committee also said that they have asked the government to increase the testings in other districts as well.
‘People who develop symptoms should come forward and get themselves tested,’ the committee said.
Ramasubramaniyam, another member said that people should maintain social distancing and wear masks at all time.
‘Extending lockdown is like trying to kill a mosquito with an axe, it won’t work out after a time,’ he said.
The lockdown implemented in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Madurai and Theni is ending tomorrow. It may be noted that on Sunday, answering to a question from the media in Salem on the possibility of the lockdown being extended beyond 30 June , Palaniswami said that a decision would be taken after the meeting with medical experts at the Secretariat.
‘Compared to the other States, Tamilnadu ranks number one in conducting Covid-19 tests. Due to the steps taken by the government, death rate is less in Tamilnadu when compared to the other States,’ he said.
