Chennai: Greater Chennai City police Commissioner A K Viswanathan has said police should not hit people.
Talking to reporters after inspecting the complete lockdown measures at Washermanpet area in North Chennai, he said there were court guidelines on how to treat people who were arrested and taken to the police station. They should not be tortured or assaulted, he added.
“In the Greater Chennai Police limits, we have been insisting that the police should not beat people. We have also instructed the police even not to verbally abuse people,” he said.
It may be recalled that father-son duo, Jayaraj and Benicks died allegedly due to police excesses on 22 and 23 June respectively, sending shock waves across the country, after they were taken to the police station for keeping their mobile shop open in violation of the lockdown guidelines.
