Chennai: Following a Madras High Court order, for the first time in the history of Tamilnadu, the Revenue department has taken charge of Sathankulam police station.
According to Thoothukudi district collector Sandeep Nanduri, Tahsildar and Deputy Tahsildar would man the station round the clock.
Observing it was the Tamil Nadu government’s prerogative to transfer the father-son duo custodial deaths probe to the CBI, the Madras High Court Madurai Bench on Monday directed the Thoothukudi district collector to depute revenue officials to take control of the Sathankulam police station.
It may be recalled that the father and son duo of P.Jayaraj (61) and J.Benicks (31) died while they were in judicial custody on June 22 and 23 respectively allegedly due to police excesses.
When Additional Advocate General (AAG) K Chellapandian informed the that the State government has decided to transfer the probe to the CBI and sought permission for the same, a Division Bench comprising Justices P.N.Prakash and B.Pugalendhi said the government need not seek its permission to transfer the case to CBI as it was a policy decision.
It was the government’s prerogative (to transfer the case to CBI) and the question of permission does not arise. “We leave it to the State to decide,” the Judges said.
