Chennai witnesses steep increase of Covid cases, deaths

Chennai: Chennai today witnessed yet another steep climb in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has said that nearly 888 deaths have taken place due to the pandemic.

Currently, there are 22,610 active cases, and a total of 34,828 patients have recovered from the viral infection after treatment.

A press release from the civic body says that while the recovery rate remains at 60 percent, the active cases are at 39 percent and death is 1.52 percent.

The locality of Royapuram has 2,309 active cases and 5,639 have recovered from it. Nearly, 141 have died of Covid-19 here.

Tondiarpet, a hotspot witnessed 131 deaths due to the novel coronavirus and 1,838 are hospitalised and 4,668 have recovered.

Teynampet has as many as 2,051 active cases and it has the second highest death toll with 134 lives being lost to the pandemic.

Kodambakkam, another red zone area has 2,322 active cases and the neighbourhood of Anna Nagar has 3,166 patients being treated.

The figures at Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar stand at 1,771. Adyar has 1,594 cases of Covid-19. There are a total of 1,175 Covid positive persons in Valsaravakkam, 1,020 cases in Ambattur and 1,062 in Thiruvotriyur.

There are 899 patients in Madharavam, 800 in Alandur and 748 in Perungudi and 506 Covid-19 in Shollinganallur. Manali currently has 443 Covid-19 patients.
