Tamilnadu’s Covid count inches towards 1.4 lakh-mark

Chennai: Coronavirus cases inched towards the 1.40 lakh mark in Tamilnadu after the State reported 4,244 fresh cases, taking the tally to 1,38,470, even as the toll mounted to 1,966 with 68 more fatalities on Sunday.

Health department in its bulletin said a record number of 16,09,448 samples of people were tested in 105 government and private labs all over the state till date, including 42,531 samples of persons during the past 24 hours.

As many as 3,617 Covid-19 positive patients were discharged after treatment and the number of recoveries rose to 89,532.

At present there were 46,969 patients undergoing treatment, including those in isolation wards and all of them were under active medical supervision, the bulletin said.

Of the total 68 fatalities reported today, 43 died in government hospitals and 25 in private hospitals.

Of the total 1,966 deaths so far, 1,253 were reported in Chennai alone, followed by Chengalpattu 158, Thiruvallur 127, Madurai 116, Kancheepuram 49, Ramanathapuram 34, Tiruvannamalai 22, Villupuram 19, Theni 18, Tiruchirapalli and Virudhunagar 16 each, Thoothukudi 14, Ranipet 13, Sivagangai and Tirunelveli 11 each, Coimbatore 9, Dindigul and Pudukottai 8 each, Erode and Salem 7 each, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Kanyakumari, Thanjavur and Vellore 6 each, Karur and Krishnagiri 4 each, Tiruppur 2, Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Perambalur, Tenkasi, Tiruppatur, Tiruvarur and Airport Surveillance 1 each.

Chennai continued to top the chart with 77,338 positive cases, after it added 1,168 fresh cases Sunday.

Next to Chennai, Chengalpattu district reported 8,120 cases, followed by Tiruvallur 6,655, Madurai 6,078, Kancheepuram 3,606, Tiruvannamalai 3,076, Vellore 2,772, Thoothukudi 2,261, Virudhunagar 2,073, Salem 1,867 and Ramanathapuram 1,849.

The rest of the coronavirus positive cases were reported from other districts of the State.
