Chennai: In a tragic accident, six members of a family from the southern Tirunelveli district were killed and two siblings sustained injuries when the SUV in which they were travelling hit a road median and overturned at Padiri on the Tindivanam-Chennai National Highway today.
Reports received at the police headquarters here said the mishap took place around 6.15 am.
The victims were proceeding to Chennai from Thisayanvilai in Tirunelveli district when the mishap took place.
The SUV was driven by one Raji, who apparently dozed off and lost control of the vehicle when they reached Padiri. In the process, the SUV hit the road median and overturned, killing six people on the spot, including a three-year-old baby.
The deceased were identified as Murugesh (40), Murugaraj (38), Sori Murugan (35), Malar (30), Raji and Muthu Manisha (three).
Two siblings–Muthu Manisha (8) and Muthu Harish (6)–who sustained serious injuries were admitted to Mundiyambakkam Villupuram Government Medical College and Hospital (VGMCH).
