Chennai: The number of Covid-19 cases in the city have slumped. This has come as a breather, as it means the local transmission has declined.
Since March, the total positive cases is 88,377 out of which 71,949 have recovered and 1,475 deaths took place.
As on 21 July, 10,943 persons were tested by the Health department. According to data from Greater Chennai Corporation, currently the active cases stand at 14,952 (17 per cent) and the recovery rate is 81 per cent.
The death rate is 1.67 per cent. Cases are climbing down in all the neighbourhoods. A hot spot, Kodambakkam has 1,947 active cases and Anna Nagar, another containment zone has 1,628 patients testing positive. Teynampet has 1,223 active cases.
Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar has 1,171 and Royapuram, which had the highest positive patients now has 1,029 cases. Another hotspot, Tondirapet currently has 771 cases. Royapuram, which has 70 per cent of its population affected, is showing an impressive recovery rate with 9,166 persons overcoming the viral infection.
Even the casualties related to Covid-19 have reduced. Teynampet has the highest death toll in the city with 213, followed by Tondiarpet with 193 deaths.
