As Coronavirus cases surge, WHO calls for emergency committee meet

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Chennai: World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that he will reconvene the Emergency Committee on Thursday to re-evaluate the coronavirus pandemic, as the global Covid-19 cases doubled over the last six weeks.

Thursday will mark six months since 30 January when the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, according to Xinhua news agency.

Only with strict adherence to health measures, from wearing masks to avoiding crowds, would the world manage to beat it, Tedros added at a virtual news briefing in Geneva.

“Where these measures are followed, cases go down. Where they are not, cases go up,” he said, praising Canada, China, Germany and South Korea for controlling outbreaks.
