Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Opposition DMK president M K Stalin hailed the landmark Supreme Court verdict that daughters have equal rights in inherit ancestral property.
In a tweet, Palaniswami, who is also the co-cordinator of the ruling AIADMK, expressed happiness about the apex court verdict providing equal rights for daughters. The judgement, which would protect social justice, was welcome, he added.
Panneerselvam, who is the coordinator of the AIADMK, said he wholeheartedly welcome the judgement that would uphold social justice. ‘Apart from upholding social justice, it will further strengthen women’s development’, he said in a tweet.
Stalin, in a tweet, said he wholeheatedly welcomed the historic judgement of the apex court and said the Dravidian movement has never rejected equal rights for women in property.
Since late leader M Karunanidhi had brought an Act 30 years back that women have equal share in property, today’s Apex court verdict was a victory for DMK’s policy.
“It will form a good base for the women to grow with their heads high with equal powers in society, economy, family and other fields”, he added.
The Apex Court, in a landmark judgment, ruled in favour of rights of daughters to have equal share in a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) property.
A three judge bench lead by Justice Arun Mishra said the daughters have coparcenary rights on the property of their parents even if the latter died before the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 came into force.
