TN’s Covid count crosses 5 lakh, toll touches 8,381

Chennai: Tamilnadu crossed the 5 lakh coronavirus cases mark on Sunday evening, with 5,693 people testing positive for Covid-19.

According to the Health department, the State’s overall case tally stood at 5,02,759. The State recorded the first case on 7 March, but August and September saw a rapid increase.

As many as 74 Covid-19 related deaths were reported on Sunday, taking the toll to 8,381. Recoveries continued to outnumber fresh infections as 5,717 people walked out from various healthcare facilities, taking the total of those cured to 4.47 lakh.

Chennai reported 994 fresh cases. As many as 1,228 persons were discharged. The city reported 17 deaths, taking its toll to 2,976. The total number of positive cases stands at 1,48,584 in the city. While 1,35,215 persons have been discharged, the city has 10,393 active cases.

As many as 84,308 specimens were tested on Sunday, pushing the total number of samples tested so far to 58.88 lakh. Among the 74 who died of the virus Sunday, 66 had comorbidities. As many as 43 deceased were between the age of 60 and 79, the bulletin added.
