As TN’s count crosses 5.5 lakh, Health Secy says ‘we are at critical phase’

Chennai: Adding 5,337 new Covid-19 cases to the caseload, Tamilnadu’s coronavirus infections crossed the 5.5 lakh mark on Tuesday evening and stood at 5,52,674. The death toll mounted to 8,947 with an addition of 76 more fatalities.

According to Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan, “We are at a critical phase. The number of new cases and daily deaths are coming down, but we will not be able to drop our guard.”

He added: “In the last six months, we have worked tirelessly to increase infrastructure in state-run hospitals. We now have more oxygen beds, ventilators, cleaner hospitals and efficient treatment protocol and a stringent sanitation procedure. Our doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers have been resourceful. Many who were infected have returned to work.”

According to the daily bulletin released by the State Health department Tuesday evening, the capital city of Chennai registered 989 cases in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of persons affected by the pandemic in the metropolis has reached 1,57,614.

As far as Chennai’s neighbouring districts are concerned, Chengalpattu registered 231 new cases, Kancheepuram saw 209 infections in the last 24 hours, and Thiruvallur posted 230 positive cases.

The districts of Cuddalore and Coimbatore today witnessed 231 and 507 new cases, respectively. As many as 76 Covid-19 patients died, taking the total number of fatalities in the State due to the pandemic to 8,947.

On the positive side, the bulletin said 5,406 patients were discharged from various hospitals in Tamilnadu. With this, the total number of recoveries in the State has touched 4,97,377.
