Editorial: UP,down

Amid outrage over the Hathras gang-rape case, another shocking crime has taken place in Uttar Pradesh. This time, a minor girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in UP’s Bulandshahr.

Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Singh said on Wednesday night, the girl’s father submitted a complaint in this regard, alleging that his 14-year-old daughter was raped by their neighbour Rizwan (20) on Tuesday night.

The victim is undergoing medical treatment. A report has been lodged against the accused and efforts are on to nab him. The accused will be taken into custody soon, police said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the Hathras gang-rape case and sought strict action against the accused, the Chief Minister’s office said.

Adityanath on Wednesday constituted a three-member SIT to probe the gang-rape case, a day after the death of the 19-year-old woman in a Delhi hospital and also asked for conducting the trial in a fast track court.

The state government has been facing massive criticism over the incident in which the Dalit girl was allegedly raped and strangulated on 14 September when she had gone to collect fodder from the field. The victim was shifted to Delhi on Monday after her condition deteriorated and finally succumbed to injuries on Tuesday. It is high time to take stringent actions to make UP a safe place for women, especially young girls.
