Chennai: Tamilnadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has sanctioned Rs 51 lakh to the Harijan Sevak Sangh (HSS) which was founded by Mahatama Gandhi, on the occasion of his 152nd birth anniversary.
Purohit, who is also the Chief Patron of HSS founded by Mahatama in 1932, sanctioned the fund from the Governor’s Discretionary Grant, to construct a ladies hostel, a Raj Bhavan release said.
He handed over the amount to HSS State president P Maruthi at Raj Bhavan, Chennai. Anandrao V Patil, Secretary to Governor was present during the event.
The HSS was constructing a new ladies hostel with all facilities to accommodate 220 students, to provide free lodging facility to the girls hailing from economically poor families and various sections of the society–Adi-Dravidar, Backward Community and Most Backward Community and other deserving students and help them to pursue education from Third standard to Professional level.
After paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Bhavan and in front of his statue at Marina, Purohit inaugurated the “Gandhi Jayanthi Celebrations and Khadi Rebate Sales” at Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan and purchased Khadi goods to mark the occasion.
