Chennai: The death toll due to coronavirus spread in Chennai is 3,293 since March. Currently five neighbourhoods in the city have more than 1,000 cases.
This morning, it is reported that 12,560 persons have the viral infection. The active cases are currently at seven per cent.
The city has recorded 1,74,143 cases of Covid-19, of which 1,58,290 have recovered since the pandemic began in March. Chennai is showing 91 per cent recovery rate.
As per data, 423 persons have died in Teynampet and 370 lives were lost in Anna Nagar. On 5 October, 13,925 tests were carried out by the city Corporation’s health department, an effective way to curtail spread.
The Greater Chennai Corporation gave an area-wise break-up of the places which have high numbers of Covid-19.
According to the data, in Kodambakkam there are 1,313 active cases, 1,309 persons in Anna Nagar have Coronavirus, in Adyar 1,117 have the infection, nearly 1,078 persons in Thiru-Vi- Ka Nagar have the disease and 1,245 persons in Teynampet have the virus.
In Ambattur, 902 have Covid, 936 cases are reported in Royapuram, 847 cases in Valsaravakkam and 903 persons in Tondiarpet have tested positive.
The pandemic has affected more men than women. As per data, 60.58 per cent of the patients are male and 39.58 per cent are female. Around 19.03 per cent of those contracting the virus is from the age group of 50-59 years.
Owing to the steady increase of Covid-19 cases in Chennai, the number of containment zones has been increased from 10 to 36, sources said.
“This is to check the spread of the pandemic and to bring it under the control,” said an official, adding that multi-pronged strategies are being followed.
Chennai is once again witnessing steady rise in the number of Covid-19 cases. From reporting less than 1000 cases on daily basis, the city is now posting around 1200-1300 cases for the past some days.
