Active Covid-19 cases in TN fall below 45,000 after months

Chennai: For the first time in the recent months, the active number of Covid-19 cases in Tamilnadu fell below 45,000 and currently stands at 44,437.

“This is because the high number of recoveries. In the days to come, we are hopeful of bringing down the number of active cases further,” said an official of Health department.

Meanwhile, Tamilnadu has become the second state to cross 10,000 deaths after Maharashtra, which has recorded more than 39,000 deaths.

The case fatality rate in Tamilnadu (1.6%) is lower than in Maharashtra (2.7%) and almost on a par with the average fatality rate in the country (1.5%).

On Thursday evening, Chennai reported 1,295 new cases and 16 deaths with maximum infections in districts like Coimbatore with 448 cases; Chengalpattu (363); Salem (362) and Thanjavur (239).

The 11 northern districts, including Chennai, together recorded 2,553 cases and 37 deaths while the eight western districts had 1,498 new cases and 15 deaths.
