Chennai: State Higher Education Minister K P Anbazhagan has said that Anna University does not require the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status.

He said that the State government has decided that the varsity does not need the IoE. “By attaining the IoE, the 69 per cent reservation will be affected. Attaining the special status will also increase the fees amount,” he said.

He further said that State government will be able to provide the same benefits which the varsity will receive by getting the IoE status.

“The State government will never allow the reservation and fees structure to be affected,” he said.

He also said that if the university Vice-Chancellor M K Surappa’s actions are not proper, it will be taken to the notice of the Governor.

“Action will be initiated by the State government against Surappa based on his response,” he added.

He further said that students can apply for Arts and Science college admissions till the end of this month.

Surappa stirred a storm when he wrote directly to the Centre proposing the university would be able to meet easily the requirement of Rs 314 crore a year (Rs 1,570 crore for five years) to get Institute of Eminence status. Tamilnadu government has written to him and demanded an explanation for his proposal.
