Chennai: Tamilnadu government has passed an order to provide a 7.5 per cent reservation in medical colleges to students of State government schools who cleared the NEET examination.
Since the admission process has started, there is an ‘urgency’ to decide on this issue, the Government Order (G.O) said.
The move by the AIADMK government came as a Bill passed by the State Assembly last month envisaging the horizontal reservation is awaiting assent from Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
The ‘bold action’ by the State government has surprised many and is being welcomed by its critics too. DMK president and Leader of Opposition M K Stalin said the G.O is a ‘welcome’ move and claimed the continuous protests and the pressure exerted by his party was behind the government order.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami tweeted that the order was issued to protect social justice and considering the welfare of government school students.
A few days ago, DMK MP TR Baalu appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct Tamilnadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to give his assent to the reservation Bill for government school students in medical courses.
