Chennai: Amid rumours that former DMK supermo M Karunanidhi’s elder son and former Union Minister M K Alagiri would float a party soon, BJP Tamilnadu unit president L Murugan has said his party was ready to welcome Alagiri if he wanted to join the BJP.
“I did not receive any official communication. I haven’t spoken with him. We are open. If he comes and if he wants to join our party, we are ready to welcome him,” Murugan said.
There have been reports in a few sections of the media that Alagiri would meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his scheduled visit to Chennai later this week.
However, Alagiri has denied the reports and said no one from the BJP had spoken to him. When asked about Murugan’s remarks, he said the former had only expressed his opinion.
A few days ago, Alagiri said an interview that DMK lacks leadership and will split after 2021 TN assembly polls.
Asked about his political plans, he said, “I have made no such decision yet. What is the hurry? Let’s wait and see what is happening. One thing I am sure of is that the DMK will certainly split soon after the Assembly polls. There is way too much infighting and lack of leadership.”
