Poongothai denies attempting suicide, party to order probe

Chennai: Alangulam MLA, DMK senior leader and former Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna has refuted reports that she had attempted suicide due to intra-party rivalry.

In a statement, she said she fainted at her home around 6 am on Thursday due to ailments. She made an appeal to media not to wrongly link her health condition with the DMK and not to tarnish the image of the party.

Stating that the party high command was treating her well, she added that the DMK had given an identity to her father (late Minister Aladi Aruna) and then to her.

According to Poongothai, former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had made her the Minister for Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal Scheme and later the Minister for Information Technology.

She said party president M K Stalin had appointed her as the head of the doctors’ wing. Meanwhile, DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi said that an inquiry would be conducted into the alleged suicide attempt of Aladi Aruna after she recovers.
