Munich: Defending champion Bayern Munich and Manchester City won their respective group stage matches on Wednesday to advance to the Champions League (CL) Round-of-16.
The two clubs joined Barcelona, Juventus, Chelsea and Sevilla in the knockout stages of the competition. On Matchday 4, Robert Lewandowski netted his 71st CL goal as home side Bayern defeated RB Salzburg 3-1. The Pole’s strike put him tied third with Real Madrid great Raul in the all-time scorers list.
Youngster Phil Foden scored for City, which defeated Olympiacos 1-0 away from home. Fellow Premier League club Liverpool wasted the chance to make it to the last-16 by losing 0-2 to Atalanta at Anfield. Real Madrid is back on track following a 2-0 success over 10-man Inter Milan, a match in which Eden Hazard opened the scoring.
