Chennai: As part of Indian Navy Week celebrations, a wreath laying ceremony was held at War Memorial here on Friday, amid heavy rains in view of cyclone Burevi.
Rear Admiral Puneet Chadha Flag Officer Commanding Tamilnadu and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA) and other senior officers from Tri-Services laid wreaths on the War Memorial paying respects to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
After the ceremony, a motorcycle rally from Chennai to various Naval Units across Tamilnadu was flagged off by FOTNA. Ten naval personnel were participating in the five-day rally.
The motorcycle expedition would traverse through naval units in the Tamilnadu and Puducherry Naval Area proceeding up to Kanyakumari covering Nagapattinam, Rameswaram, Tuticorin and Trichy districts and would return on 9 December.
The expedition is aimed at showcasing Indian Navy amongst the citizens and to encourage the younger generation to choose the Indian Navy as a career option.
To commemorate the Indian Navy Day, the first edition of Tamilnadu and Puducherry Navy Day Run/Ride 2020 was being organised virtually for three days from Friday. A total of 3,000 registrations have been received, a defence release said.
Two Naval ships INS Sukanya and INS Sumitra were anchored off Chennai lighthouse and were illuminated at sunset as part of Navy Day celebrations.
