Chennai: The crucial meeting between protesting farmers and the government scheduled for today, has been reportedly called off.
According to sources, the development comes on the backdrop of Tuesday’s meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, that failed to see any resolution, as the farmers refused to accept the government’s offer of amendment in the laws.
“No meeting will be held between farmers and the government on Wednesday. The Minister has said a proposal will be given to farmer leaders. We will hold a meeting to discuss the proposal,” Hannan Mollah, the general secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, said.
“I would say that the meeting was positive. The government has taken cognisance of our demands and will give a draft to us, which we will deliberate upon,” Rakesh Tikait, spokesperson of the Bhartiya Kisan Union, said.
It may be noted that Tuesday marked the Bharat Bandh, that was called by the farmer groups.
While few States like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Assam saw a completely shutdown, there was mixed response in Punjab, Haryana and Karnataka. Life was normal in Tamilnadu and Kerala.
The agitation that is on for more than ten days, has the support of most opposition parties, trade and transport unions and a wide section of organisations.
