Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated Mayiladuthurai district through video conferencing from the Secretariat this morning.
The development comes eight months after the Chief Minister through an official order announced the formation of the new district, which will be the State’s 38th.
It will have Mayiladuthurai as its headquarters, and has been carved out of Nagapattinam district.
It may be recalled that the people of Mayiladuthurai had been demanding for it to be a separate district for almost 25 years.
In April, the CM had said in the Legislative Assembly that the formation of the 38th district is important for administrative convenience and accelerating the public welfare schemes.
Last year, the government had created four districts in line with the announcement made by Palaniswami in the Assembly and during his Independence Day speech. The four districts carved out were Tirupattur, Chengalpattu, Tenkasi and Ranipet.
