New Delhi: The construction work of the new Parliament building started today.
The new Parliament building will have a triangular shape and is expected to be completed by the 75th anniversary of India’s independence in 2022.
The government plans to hold the monsoon session of Parliament in 2022 in the new building.
The work, that involves the construction of the new Parliament building, a new Central Secretariat and other related complexes was slated to start on the first dawn after Makar Sankranti.
The Rs 12,879 crore project will involve shifting of residences of Prime Minister and Vice President near the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Central Secretariat will be constructed to accommodate the offices of ministries, cabinet secretaries and other key departments.
The project, once ready, is expected to save the exchequer a whopping Rs 1000 crore, which is being paid as rent by the government for several of its offices across the national capital.
