Chennai: A week into kickstarting its inoculation programme, India has managed to vaccinate almost 16 lakh people.
This is reportedly the fastest by any country, with the UK taking 18 days and US taking ten days to reach the same mark.
As on 24 January, nearly 16 lakh beneficiaries have received anti-Covid shots, with a total of 27,920 sessions conducted so far.
Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal account for 75 per cent of the total active cases in the country.
The vaccination drive in India was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 16 January via video conferencing.
Although initially there was low turnout due to people’s hesitancy, the numbers seemingly picked up as the days progressed, it is said.
India currently is administering the Covishield and Covaxin, manufactured by the Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech respectively.
