Chennai: Three private colleges in Tamilnadu have been brought under the State government, in a new development in the education department.
The government’s Higher Education Department issued an order in this regard, transferring the Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital, the Rani Meyyammai College of Nursing and the Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital to the Health Department.
It may be noted that students of Raja Muthiah College in Chidambaram have been on a sit-in protest on campus for over six weeks, protesting against high fees.
The students alleged that it is more than that of other government medical colleges. It is expected that all the three institutions will now be jointly known as the Government Medical College, Cuddalore.
As per the government order, the property on which the Raja Muthiah college and its premises are located is worth Rs 249.99 crore. The institution has 332 teaching staff and 1,426 non-teaching staff. A total of 2,293 students are enrolled.
