Top EC team to visit TN to review poll preparedness

Sunil Arora

Chennai: A top team of Election Commission of India headed by the Chief  Election Commissioner Sunil Arora will visit Chennai on 10 and 11 February to review poll preparedness in Tamilnadu.

According to sources, they will meet the political parties, hold meeting with top officials and enforcement agencies, besides meeting senior officers of the government headed by Chief Secretary during the course of two days.

With Assembly polls in Tamilnadu approaching, the Election Commission recently said strict surveillance will be in place and comprehensive preparations will be carried out to make the election ‘influence- and inducement-free.’

A high-level delegation led by Secretary General Umesh Sinha landed in Chennai in December on a two-day visit to review the State’s preparedness for the Assembly polls, due in April-May 2021.

Addressing the media, the Commission said Covid-19 precautions that were followed in Bihar elections and by-elections in various States will be replicated in Tamilnadu.

With Tamilnadu notorious for the misuse of money during elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to make the 2021 Assembly elections in the state free from the influence of money, freebies and liquor. “The Commission will come down heavily on those who try to influence voters,” Umesh Sinha said.
