Chennai: A day after Tamilnadu Chief Secretary Rajeev Ranjan held a meeting with District Collectors and directed them to impose Covid-19 control measures, State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan today asked people not to believe in rumours of another lockdown.
Speaking to mediapersons after reviewing the corona ward at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Radhakrishnan warned that there are chances of gradual increase of coronavirus cases in the State.
“There might be rise due to the political meetings and family functions held in the State. People are not wearing masks during the election campaign,” he said.
He said that the organisers of any meeting should ensure that all covid protocols are followed.”Organisers should ensure that participants wear mask at all times,” he added.
He further said that number of people wearing masks has increased in the past three days.
“People should not be lethargic. People with symptoms should immediately get checked. It is getting difficult to control the spread of virus in Chennai, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Tiruppur and Thanjavur districts,” he added.
Radhakrishnan also said that places that reported less number of cases last year are reporting more cases now and vice-versa.
“People should not hesitate to take the vaccination provided by the government. Vaccination is being given at 3,400 locations. So far 16 lakh people have been vaccinated and 20 lakh vaccines are still in stock,” he added.
He further said District Collectors have been asked to bring back the corona centers in each district.
It may be noted that Rajeev Ranjan on Tuesday held a meeting with District Collectors to review the situation and to increase precautionary measures to be taken during the election campaign.
Sources said that the District Collectors expressed their opinion during the meeting.
Following this Ranjan has asked the Collectors to take measures with immediate effect to control the spread of coronavirus.
It is said that Ranjan also held meeting with Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo regarding the coronavirus prevention measures to be taken during the election campaigns.
Amid increasing cases of Covid-19 in various parts of Tamilnadu, there are speculations and rumours on social media that lockdown would be implemented in the State once again to check the spread of the pandemic.
