Kolkata: The Election Commission today barred BJP leader Rahul Sinha from campaigning 48 hours for his remark on the Cooch Behar killings.
The ban has been imposed without giving Sinha a chance to present his defence due to “urgency of the matter”, the poll body said.
The EC said he made “highly provocative statements mocking the human life, inciting the forces that could have serious law and order implications”.
The Commission found his remarks violative of the model code and various provisions of the Representation of the People Act and the Indian Penal Code.
The ban started at 12 noon today and will remain in force till 12 noon of 15 April, the order said.
“Not four, eight people should have been shot dead in Sitalkuchi. The Central forces should be issued a show cause notice asking why they killed only four and not eight…Goons are trying to deprive people of their democratic rights. Central forces responded appropriately. If it happens again, they will answer again,” Sinha said.
