TN’s daily Covid cases crosses 10,000 mark, 42 dead in 24 hours

Chennai: Tamilnadu has reported a surge in Covid-19 outbreak in the State with a total of 10,723 new cases.

The State has also reported 42 new deaths caused by the coronavirus. The total tally of deaths has now reached 13,113 in the State.

The record surge in daily infections took the State’s tally to 9,91,451. Chennai recorded another new high with 3,304 cases. The city accounted for 16 of the 42 fatalities.

For the second day in a row, over a lakh samples were tested, taking the total figure to 1,10,130. As many as 1,08,155 people got tested on Sunday.

The State health department confirmed 42 people had died on Sunday, pushing the net toll to 13,113 —the third highest in the country after Maharashtra (60,473) and Karnataka (13,351). Of the 42 deceased, 37 had comorbidities.

In hotspot Chennai (3,304 new cases), hospital beds were filling up fast as the number of active cases breached the 25,000 mark. Almost 35 per cent of the State’s active cases (70,391) are in Chennai.
