Chennai: For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began, Coimbatore on Wednesday reported more fresh cases than Chennai. Coimbatore reported 4,268 cases while Chennai recorded 3,561 cases.
Following this, the Health department has upped its focus on the textile city and other western towns of the State.
According to Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan, the prime focus now is on Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode districts.
“The decline in the northern region is preliminary, and we cannot take it as a sure sign. Still, the focus has shifted to the West. We have advised the Coimbatore district administration of unified control measures, such as the ones we implemented in Chennai to arrest the spread,” he said.
Chennai continued to record a steady decline in fresh infections, with the daily count dropping below 4,000 on Wednesday. There was a marginal dip in new cases in the State as well, as 33,764 more people tested positive, even as 475 more succumbed to Covid-19.
