Lockdown restrictions to be relaxed in Chennai and neighbouring districts

Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin, on Wednesday, held a meeting with officials to discuss the implementation of lockdown and its extension past 7 June.

Sources said officials have recommended to ease restrictions in districts where Covid-19 cases are steadily coming down.

They also suggested intensifying the lockdown in western districts as the number of cases is high in that region.

Hence, it is expected that Chennai and its neighbouring districts, where cases are reducing, can expect ease of restrictions.

Asserting that the lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19 could not be extended endlessly, Stalin on Tuesday said the pandemic could be eradicated only with the people’s full support and cooperation.

In a video message to the people of the State, he said, “We cannot keep extending the lockdown…there has to be a full stop to this soon. It is only in people’s hands. There can be a full stop to the spread of Covid only if restrictions are followed completely”.

Noting that even if some people violated the lockdown restriction, its complete effect could not be realised, he said, “we had to face the second wave because of the failure to put a full stop to the first wave”.

The second wave has posed a challenge to the State’s economy and health infrastructure, he said.
