Stalin announces Rs 20 lakh to families of 21 missing fishermen

Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh each to the families of 21 fishermen from the State who went missing while fishing in deep sea during the cyclonic storm Tauktae in the Arabian Sea last month.

An official release said following a request made by the Chief Minister, search operations were carried out by the Coast Guard ships and a helicopter.

A helicopter from the Lakshadweep administration was also deployed for search operations since 15 May.

Since the missing fishermen could not be traced till date, the State government, taking into account that fishing was their only source of livelihood and their family conditions, announced a relief of Rs 20 lakh each to their families.

Of the 21 fishermen, six were from Nagapattinam, three from Mayiladuthurai and 12 from Kanyakumari districts.
