Chennai: A special team of Chennai police has arrested the kingpin of a gang involved in a series of thefts at various State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs in Tamilnadu. This comes after three members of the gang falling in police net in the last one week.
Sources said the special team of the city police, with the help of the Haryana State police, has intensified its search to nab the remaining accused hiding in a village near Ballabhgarh.
Police conducted custodial interrogation with three accused — Amir Arsh, Virender Rawat and Najim Hussain — who were brought to the city recently.
Joint Commissioner of police Narenthiran Nayar and his team of officers brought one of the accused to the SBI ATM at Choolai. The police had also invited bank officials to watch the demonstration so they could take measures to prevent such thefts.
The gang of thieves knew about a glitch with a specific set of cash deposit machines installed at SBI ATMs across Chennai. The gang used a specific device to block the sensor while retrieving money and waited until the clip on the cash deposit machine retracted, during which they used to pull the money out. This had made the machine think that no money was withdrawn.
According officials, the gang had committed similar offences in other parts of the country as well.
