Gold worth Rs 24.2 lakh seized at Chennai airport, 1 arrested

Chennai: Officials of Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized 495 gms of gold valued at Rs 24.2 lakh and arrested one passenger who arrived from Sharjah at the Anna International airport here.

A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on intelligence, one Kalaiyarasan Karunanithi (31) of Thiruvarur, who arrived from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight was intercepted at the exit.

On personal search, four bundles of gold paste weighing about 602 grams were recovered from rectum. On extraction 495 grams of 24k purity gold valued at Rs 24.2 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.

The passenger was arrested. Further investigation is under progress.
