Chennai: Five labourers allegedly involved in the rape of a college student near Mysuru have been arrested, Karnataka DG and IGP Praveen Sood has said. While four of the accused were arrested from Tiruppur district, one was picked up from Erode district.
According to reports, police teams from Karnataka arrested N Murugesan (22), S Joseph (28), S Prakash alias Aravind (21) and a juvenile boy within the limits of the Cheyur police station near Avinashi in Tiruppur district.
Police from Karnataka nabbed the other accused, Boopathi (28), from Talavadi in Erode district. Two more accused from Tiruppur district, who were allegedly involved in the gang rape, have absconded.
They initially tried to rob the college student and her male friend and when they did not succeed, they allegedly raped her near Chamudi foothills on the outskirts of Mysuru on 24 August, police sources said.
The DGP said the accused were daily-wage workers who were engaged in carpentry and wiring works; two of them are drivers. Police said the six accused were in Mysuru for work and followed the duo to the secluded stretch.
