Editorial: Ready, steady, go

The Oval Test super-show by Shardul Thakur could not be of any use as selectors have decided to ignore the all-round skills of Chennai Super Kings all rounder. Not only Shardul but his CSK teammate Deepak Chahar was also not considered for selection.

Yuzvendra Chahal who was almost considered a certainty also has been ignored by the selectors as they picked squad for T20 World Cup. R Ashwin returns to the Indian team. Varun Chakravarthy, who has impressed in the IPL, has also been selected in the 15-member side, with Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar and Axar Patel making up the spin department.

Former captain MS Dhoni will soon be back in the Team India dugout — this time, as a mentor for the T20 World Cup. The team has either fallen at the final hurdle or failed to make it to the final in the Champions Trophy, and World T20 and 50-over World Cups. Dhoni, who leads Chennai Super Kings, is a three-time IPL-winning captain and has brought home three major ICC trophies — World T20, Champions Trophy and World Cup.

With Shastri’s tenure ending after the T20 World Cup, and the BCCI not keen to renew his contract, Dhoni’s appointment works as a perfect stop-gap arrangement. Since the BCCI wasn’t keen to appoint a new coach just before the high-intensity T20 event.
