Review: Laabam

Vijay Sethupathi’s Laabam is the first biggie to hit the screens after cinema halls were re-opened a few days ago.

Produced by 7Cs Entertainment, SP Jananathan of Peranmai and Iyarkkai fame has directed Laabam but even before the release of his film he passed away early this year. Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu, Kalaiyarasan, Danie, and Dhanshika  playing pivotal characters in Laabam.

Imman has composed music for the movoe while Ramji of Paruthiveeran fame has cranked the camera.

The movie as the trailer suggested speaks on travails farmers face. Jananathan seemed to havce tried to convey one too many things including economy, agricultural crops pricing mafia, depletion of natural resource, labour exploitation etc. Shruthi Hassan and Sai Dhanshika have no big impact in the story.

Vijay Sethupathi plays Pakkiri, who returns to his village after a long-trip across the country. After becoming the chief of the village’s farmer’s association, he protests the greedy capitalist Vanangamudi’s (Jagapathi Babu) plan of setting up a bio-diesel project in the village.  He along with his team of young men wages a battle and did ge win in that forms the crux. He doesn’t miss a chance to address the negatives of capitalism to his village people. Shruti Haasan plays Clara, a singer.

All said, Laabam tries to address few issues and the intentions are good but execution has gone wrong at most places.
